Dear Students,

I apologize for yesterday.  I attached both the sub plans and my phone number to the sub request I submitted. The sub should have had the sub plans or, at the very least, should have called me if he had any problems accessing them.

Periods 1&7: Senior AP English, Room 210

Close Reading: The Art and Craft of Analysis in The Language of Composition.  Read 40-45 paying close attention to the speeches by Queen Elizabeth and Winston Churchill and the commentary the text provides on those speeches.  We want to bring the same awareness to our analysis of the speeches and comments that students found last night.

Watch dramatic reenactment of speech...

What are the SOAPS for your candidate's comments.  Make a simple chart.

Also, what struck you as noteworthy/interesting about these comments?  What caught your attention?
How would you describe the tone?
Are there any key word choices you notice?
Any significant details included (or excluded)?

In short, explain why the particular comment caught your attention and what you notice about the rhetorical features of the comments.  They might talk about purpose, audience, occasion, ethos, logos, pathos, persona, polemic, subject, word choices, sentence structure, tone, etc.  Anything that they notice about the message was delivered and how it was tailored to meet a specific purpose and appeal to a particular segment of the American audience. (15 minutes)

Homework: Read 48-63.  This section will provide you with several examples of how to annotate for rhetorical elements and then write essays about the rhetoric of a chosen piece.
